What Are Federal Crimes?
Federal crimes differ from state crimes because they involve criminal allegations that occur across state lines. Both physically traveling across state lines and having communications or business dealings can qualify. In some cases, charges can be brought in both state and federal courts. In the case of cybercrime, child pornography that conceivably affects interstate commerce is tried on a federal level. Crimes against federal personnel or involving federal agencies may also be tried federally. The Eastern Court handles quite a few McGirt cases involving tribal members.
